Night Shift Sleep Hygiene Checklist

Standard sleep advice assumes you sleep at night. This checklist is built for people who sleep while the sun is up — every item tuned for the day-sleeper's reality.

About a 5-minute read

Sleep hygiene is the set of habits and environmental conditions that make sleep possible. For day sleepers, the standard lists miss the actual hard parts — light at the wrong hours, a household that's awake, a body clock fighting the schedule. Work through this checklist top to bottom; most people find three or four items they're currently getting wrong.

Your bedroom

Light control

Your wind-down routine (30–60 minutes, same order daily)

Stimulants, food, and naps

Protecting the schedule

When to get help

If you're doing the fundamentals right and still can't sleep — or you're falling asleep at work, while driving, or despite being exhausted — that's beyond sleep hygiene. Shift work sleep disorder is a recognized condition, and it's treatable. Talk to a healthcare professional rather than white-knuckling it; drowsy driving kills.
